as of Feb 2025 - building demolished
Nothing too exciting there these days, but once upon a time a lot of downtown Las Vegas was lit by fluorescent, you can see it in films shot here in the 60s and 70s. A couple of things on the south Strip- the only old stuff seems to be on private land. This was the parking lot for the Tropicana, at what was Island Way on Tropicana Ave. Quite a few poles with twin Westinghouse OV-50 luminaires left on them, the "finned" type with the capacitor in the fin on top. The Tropicana casino was opened in 1957 so these fixtures quite possibly date back to then. Since then, Island Wy changed name to Ocean Dr, and the Tropicana Casino was demolished, demolition still under way in Feb 2025. Even though the Tropicana itself is shown in the latest GSV (Feb 2025) as a pile of rubble, just one of the parking lot poles complete with the pair of finned OV-50 luminaires was still there. I suspect it's gone now at time of writing (June 2025).

19 years on from whan I took this picture, at time of writing (June 2025) I finally remembered where these were. Westgate Resorts has a mall here called the Showcase Mall which includes a food court, a Coca-Cola store, a Marshalls department store and a M&M's World. It opened in 1996. This is the south Strip, about 3785 S Las Vegas Blvd. The Monte Carlo hotel can be seen in the background. It changed to the Park MGM in 2018. For a town that changes as fast as Las Vegas, it's unusual that this mall's frontage was never really changed too much over the past 19 years. Latest GSV (Jan 2025) shows everything the same as when I took the picture. Over the entrance to the M&M's World store there are large reliefs of the M&M characters, and these floods - there are 3 of them, a single and a double pole - are on the street side of the sidewalk to illuminate them. The sidewalk bumps out here quite a way at the front of the store. The floods look like 400W quartz MH, the arc tube that is visible suggests an end of life or even a blown lamp. No word on whether they have had LED retrofits since then.

as of Jan 2023A more recent sight, this seen in the Winchester residential area of town on Golden Arrow near Eastern. GE induction fixtures, working rather well.
