Update Jan 2018: Over the past few years Salt Lake City has
removed all the series installations seen in 2006 on these pages. A lot
of the roads have been left unlit mid block, with HPS or LED fixtures
at intersections.
This is a selection of pictures from Salt Lake
City, Utah showing some of the ancient lighitng they have there. It's
the largest series incandescent installation of this age outside Los
Angeles, unless anyone knows different!There are quite a few of the incandescent heads that are missing their relectors. Look at the large pic and you'll see the filament is still intact on this one however.

When we toured round looking at this system, there was still miles of series incandescent left. Most of the stuff in these pics is bounded by the I-15 on the East, roughly 200S to the North, and E3900S to the South.

It's not just old fixtures that are series, though- here's a relatively modern cobrahead that has been modified to series wiring- looks a little odd though!
This pole also plays host to the series regulator for this string.
This series regulator must have a built in switch, as the photocell is connected directly to it. Sometimes there is a separate oil switch or contactor for controlling the string.

...just a little further North, the incandescent radial waves lighting this 8-lane road(!) turn into more like the sort of lighting you'd expect for a road this size.

....and a quite unusual sight- some mercury cobras in a parking lot. Most of the non- incandescent stuff on Salt Lake City's roads is HPS.
The modern repro teardrop is not unusual- the steel lattice pole is.

There is one other sort of incandescent fixture we found- acorns on spun aluminium poles.
They seem to be confined to a housing development just west of Foothill Dr/E2100S.

...and to finish with, a mercury dayburner, a rare sight in these parts for both reasons!
