SHL scans General Electric 1963
Looking for survivors from this advert 62 years on, brings up some surprising - and not so surprising - results. That there should be anything remining at all is fascinating in itself.
Lazarus West Columbus OH - This was opened by F. & R. Lazarus & Company, who had stores across the midwest, in August 1962 as their first branch store outside Columbus. It was located at Georgesville Rd and W Broad St (Hwy 40) west of Columbus. As of 2015 the lot was still there, having been used by Sears at some point. Some of the building in the original photo was still standing, by 2024 the site was being cleared. The poles survived but the Powerglows were gone before GSV started recording this location, in 2007.
Hendersonville NC Country Club - As Hendersonville is the location of a GE plant and also formerly their Outdoor Lighing Center, it's not surprising to see GE fixtures at the local country club. As of Mar 2025, there are at least three PMC-116 post tops left that can be seen via GSV, from Hebron Rd looking at a set of stairs going down from the parking lot. The rest of the parking lots appear to have had their GE lumiaires replaced with lantern fixtures some time before 2008.
Bryant Park NY - As of 2021 there are modern twin head fixtures here.
South Carolina State Capitol - Doesn't look like there is any large scale floodlighting any more here. There are some architectural luminires on the walkways, but that seems to be all.
Scarborough Downs track closed in 2020, but pictures from then show no sign of track lighting.
Alma golf course - Function has changed to more of a driving range, no sign of old flood lighting.
Seattle Center - Heavily remodeled since the 1962 Century 21 fair, no trace of the pictured fluorescents remain.
