Platte City is about 15 miles NW of Kansas City, on Interstate 29. The only reason it's mentioned is that whilst stopping to get gas at a Conoco station at exit 18 (Branch St, MO-92), this is the sight that greeted us.
It's only speculation to say that it was probably some bad weather that caused the ballast to come loose and fall out of the fixture, smashing the lens on the way. This part of the world does have tornadoes though, so maybe that was what happened. A 400W MH ballast is pretty heavy, so the smashed lens is no surprise. How long it hung on (literally) after we left, who knows. Some time after this pic was taken, the station changed to a Phillips 66, and all the area lighting was changed to LED.
