Update Feb 2017: Sometime between Oct 2011 and May 2014, all these fixtures were replaced- the poles remain, but are topped by a selection of various floods now.
It's not too common these days to see an almost full, mostly working installation of what we could call gas station fluorescents, but there are some left. This one is on the lot of Huntington Beach Jeeps, which is on Beach Blvd, a couple of blocks south of the 405.These are 4 tube fixtures, and as can be seen, are at a pretty low mounting height.
As the closeup pics show, they aren't in wonderful condition but are mostly still going strong. The low mounting height means the light levels are really quite good, and this 40-ish year old installation gives significantly less light trespass than the modern auto lot lighting solution, which is usually 1kW metal halide shoeboxes.
So much for progress!
