The following pictures are of the Moon Towers, 17 of which are still dotted around the downtown Austin area. The history (erected in 1895) and location of them are well known and won't be repeated here, but they are a unique sight in this day & age.
When we visited, there appeared to be some maintenance work going on, with some of the towers being changed to metal halide lamps from the mercury vapour that they all used to be.
This pic shows the moon tower at 13th and Windsor, and you can see why they acquired that name. The dim light filtered through the trees really does look like moonlight, and in the days where there were no other sources of light on the street, it must have been a magical scene.
