GEC O2257A / F64212
October 2008
It's not a huge thing, the rim is 9" dia., and the height of the whole thing is about 14". The two brass wingnuts undo to release the rim which looks like it held either a wellglass or a refractor ring. From the size of it, it looks like it would have used a GLS lamp of up to 100W.
If you get the fullsize pic, you'll see that the top has the Gec logo cast in, and 'O 2257'. There don't seem to be any other markings. I don't know if the BC socket is original.

A little more
information came to light- Simon Cornwell had a look in some old
catalogues and said:
"I think your lantern is a GEC F64212,
which was fitted with a clear well glass. The 9" rim matches the
description in the catalogue. However, "O" section was for Motor Car
Accessories. There was also the "OS" section which was Osram and
Robertson Lamps - which doesn't help either."
Sandblasting got all the muck off, the corrosion was not too bad as to warrant filling. Unfortunately one of the rim lugs on the main body didn't survive the sandblasting as it was cracked. I'll araldite it on at a later date.
Some coats of primer followed...
...followed by a coat or three of Plastikote green, which matched the original GEC green quite well. The top of the rim was stamped 'O 2257 A' presumably as different size rims could be specified. Whether an 'A' rim is big or small, we'll probably never know.
The underside of the rim and body were painted white, as per the original paintwork- there was enough left to tell what colours this originally was.
The lamp holder turned out to be original- stamped 'GEC'.
It looks good with a GLS lamp, and all I need to do now is find a wellglass to make it complete.
